Barrington 300

The town of Barrington was founded in 1717 rather than 1770 as shown on the signs at the entrances to town. 1770 was the date of Barrington's refounding after 23 years as part of Warren, Rhode Island. The Town Calendar for 2017 displays the portrait of Viscount John Shute Barrington, for whom our town was named. Lord Barrington was a powerful English politician and theologian, and the brother of Samuel Shute, Governor of Massachusetts. The Calendar cover also includes a transcript of the November 18th, 1717, creation of "Barrington" by the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

In November of 2015, a group of citizens urged the Town Council to form Barrington 300 to celebrate 300 YEARS OF PROGRESS IN BARRINGTON. In August of 2016, Barrington 300 was made a Town Administrative Committee and charged with creating a Calendar of Events. Barrington 300 is comprised of 50 volunteers with a Board and Advisory Committee, who will execute the year-long program.

This represents a unique opportunity to unite our community through the Celebration of its 300-year history with many town-wide activities. 2017 promises to be an exciting year for Barrington. It offers a great opportunity for the community to learn about Barrington's heritage and participate in this Tricentennial Celebration!

Three back-to-back sessions will cover a range of beginning and intermediate topics, illustrated with many examples from Dr. Taylors research and teaching career, with question and answer time. The final hour will include hands-on presentation of unique and helpful local resources from Barrington Preservation Society record collections.

Topics introduced: Beginning basics; DNA; online sources and organizations; local sources and organizations; special records and strategies for Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts; special local resources in Barrington Preservation Society collections.

Nathaniel Lane Taylor is Editor and Publisher of The American Genealogist, the leading independent journal of genealogy in the United States. He holds a Ph.D. in history and taught medieval and modern history at Harvard, Brown, and elsewhere for twelve years. He has published many articles on genealogy in pre-modern Europe as well as colonial New England and Virginia. He speaks in New England and nationally on genealogy and heraldry. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists (the nation’s honorary society of the fifty most accomplished living genealogists) in 2011.

Registration information to come later.

A new “Images of America” series book, BARRINGTON, is being published by the Barrington Preservation Society in conjunction with the Arcadia Publishing Company. This 128-page book combines a readable condensed history from its first European settlers in the 1640s through the post-WWII housing development and population explosion and over two hundred vintage photographs with captions. The book will be available for purchase throughout town after May 20, 2017. Outlets will include the Barrington Historical Society Museum, Barrington Town Hall and the Barrington Library.
