Building Official

The Town of Barrington, Rhode Island is seeking an experienced Building Official. This position reports to the Director of Planning, Building and Resiliency and is responsible for enforcing and maintaining state, local, and federal regulations. The Building Official is also responsible for understanding and enforcing zoning regulations within the Town and overseeing the part-time electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspectors and ensures exceptional customer service. Knowledge of Town zoning and state building codes and laws will be important to the success of this position.

The Position

Review building plans, complete inspections of new construction and modified construction to ensure compliance with all code requirements, safety standards, and town zoning regulations.

Serve as the Town’s Zoning Official enforcing compliance with Town ordinance. Attendance at monthly Zoning Board of Review meetings required. Attendance at Building Board of Review meetings, when scheduled, also is required. Both boards meeting in the evening.

Issue building permits and demolition permits through the Town’s e-permitting system.

Enforce FEMA flood regulations; complete FEMA Community Rating System activities working in coordination with the Director of Planning, Building and Resiliency and the Town’s Resiliency Officer.

Provide comments on Planning Board applications, as to compliance with Zoning Ordinance.

Conduct occasional home repair program site visits to help Town determine applicants’ repair needs.

Maintain an efficient and customer-responsive building office, working with administrative assistant.


Must be certified by the Building Code Standards Committee of the State of RI (CBO) with a minimum of 7 years’ experience as a building official/inspector or inbuilding construction.

Demonstrate knowledge of the State Building Code, laws and town ordinances and their relationship to the aforementioned duties and responsibilities.

Knowledge of the quality and strength of the building materials, accepted requirements of building construction, fire prevention, light and ventilation, safe exit facilities and other items of equipment essential for the safety, comfort and convenience of occupants.

Ability to work collaboratively with the administration, staff, customers and demonstrate ability to supervise part time non-union employee.

Demonstrate knowledge of local, state, and federal zoning regulations.

Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) preferred, or willingness to obtain CFM status within 1 year.

Beach Attendant/ Lifeguards
Summer 2019

The Town of Barrington is seeking Part time Lifeguard/Beach Attendant positions available for Barrington Town Beach summer season! Lifeguards must be non-surf certified. (Non Surf Certification test is on May 24, 2017 at Burlingame Park)

Both positions require daytime availability starting May 25th when the beach opens.
